Pleebo Health Center Unveils New OPD, Boosting Healthcare Delivery in Maryland County

Pleebo, Maryland County – August 7, 2025 — The Pleebo Health Center has officially opened a newly expanded Outpatient Department (OPD), marking a significant improvement in healthcare access for residents in southeastern Liberia. This expansion is set to enhance the quality and efficiency of services for thousands of people in one of Maryland County’s most populated areas.
The dedication ceremony, held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, brought together community members, health workers, and local officials to celebrate the achievement. The health center’s resident doctor, Dr. Shadrach K. Gono, thanked the government and donor institutions for their support, calling the project a “commitment to saving lives.”
Mr. Garrison Sayor, the Health Center’s Administrator, revealed that the OPD expansion cost a total of $15,329.90. International partners and donors provided 81% of the funding, while the Liberian government covered the remaining 19% through its budget.
“This facility is part of our broader effort to decongest existing wards and create a more patient-friendly environment,” Mr. Sayor said. He also proudly noted that the health center now has three resident medical doctors—a historic first for the institution.

While praising the progress, Mr. Eugene Glomah of the Maryland County Health Team highlighted the urgent need for a fully functional surgical theater. “Despite this significant progress, the lack of a surgical theater remains a critical gap,” he stated.
His call was supported by other local leaders, including Hon. Aloysius Williams, Superintendent of the Pleebo-Sodoken Statutory District, and Pleebo City Mayor Hon. Larry G. Geekor, who both pledged continued support to address the center’s needs.
The new OPD is designed to reduce patient congestion, shorten wait times, and improve the overall efficiency of service delivery. It includes dedicated spaces for patient registration and waiting, which directly addresses previous overcrowding issues.
The Pleebo Health Center is the largest health facility in District #2, serving a population of over 39,000. Established in the early 1990s, the center now provides comprehensive 24/7 care, including maternal and newborn services, inpatient and outpatient treatment, and emergency services. Its reputation has grown, attracting patients from neighboring districts and even from across the border in Ivory Coast.
Looking ahead, administrators hope that continued collaboration will help meet remaining needs, including the establishment of specialized departments and the much-needed surgical theater. “This is just the beginning,” Dr. Gono said. “With continued support, we will ensure that every person in Pleebo and beyond has access to the quality healthcare they deserve.”
