Pleebo Erupts in Celebration and Call to Action for International Women’s Day

March 8, 2025 – Pleebo City, Maryland County – Pleebo City resonated with the powerful message of “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment” as it hosted a vibrant and impactful celebration of International Women’s Day. The event, marked by a spirited parade and a compelling indoor program at Pleebo City Hall, underscored the community’s dedication to advancing gender equality.
The day’s festivities, masterfully guided by Jackson W. Williams Jr., brought together a diverse cross-section of people, including local government officials, security personnel, civil society representatives, traditional leaders, religious figures, and numerous women’s groups.
Mayor Larry G. Geekor, in his welcoming address, emphasized the global significance of International Women’s Day, highlighting its role in focusing attention on women’s rights, gender equality, and empowerment. “Today’s celebration is a testament to our collective commitment to enhancing the lives of women and girls, ensuring they have equitable access to opportunities and rights,” Mayor Geekor affirmed.
Maryland County Gender Coordinator Marah A. Suku delivered the official International Women’s Day message, reinforcing the 2025 theme’s call for concrete actions to secure equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls. She emphasized the critical role of empowering youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls, in driving sustainable societal transformation.
“This year commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action,” Suku noted, underscoring the document’s pivotal role in shaping global efforts to advance women’s rights through legal protection, access to services, and the dismantling of outdated social norms.
The event’s keynote address, delivered by Mrs. Amanda D. Tubman Wright, a prominent Maryland County native now residing in the United States. Wright passionately advocated for the recognition of women’s invaluable contributions to society, especially in leadership roles.
“Women are among the most dedicated professionals and skilled leaders, yet they continue to face unequal recognition across numerous sectors,” Wright stated. “We must challenge the biases that impede our progress and assert our leadership in decision-making spaces.”
She urged women to actively pursue leadership positions and engage in shaping policies that directly affect their lives. “The journey to genuine gender equality begins with us amplifying our voices and ensuring our representation in all spheres of decision-making,” Wright asserted.
