The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has escalated its nationwide campaign against illegal mini slot machines, launching a series of enforcement operations across Montserrado County. This initiative is designed to protect Liberian youth and restore regulatory order to the country’s gaming sector. The latest operations, conducted in various communities in and around Monrovia, target unregulated gambling devices that have become increasingly accessible to minors.
NLA officials stated that this initiative reflects the government’s firm resolve to ensure all games of chance in Liberia are properly licensed, responsible, and lawful. Acting under its statutory mandate to supervise all gaming activities, the Authority deployed specialized teams from its Operations Department, Inspectorate Division, and Monitoring and Evaluation Unit. Working alongside national security agencies, these teams are conducting targeted inspections and raids on locations suspected of hosting unauthorized machines.
During recent exercises, officers confiscated numerous illegal mini slot machines from unlicensed operators found in violation of standing gaming regulations. These devices have been taken into NLA custody pending further administrative and legal proceedings. The crackdown is a cornerstone of the Authority’s renewed commitment to strengthening oversight and ensuring that all operators strictly adhere to the legal framework governing the industry.
A primary driver of this enforcement is the rising accessibility of gambling to minors. The NLA expressed deep concern over the proliferation of mini slot machines in residential and commercial areas, which creates an environment where children and vulnerable youth can easily gamble. During a raid in the Sinkor community on Monday, March 9, 2026, the NLA’s Deputy Director General for Operations, Christian K. Cooper, issued a stern warning to all operators. He urged them to ensure their businesses are properly licensed and compliant with all regulations. Hon. Cooper emphasized that the NLA will not compromise on the law, noting that any individual or business found engaging in illegal activities or allowing minors to gamble will face the full weight of legal penalties. He stated that these ongoing raids serve as a clear signal that lawlessness in the gaming sector will no longer be tolerated.
Furthermore, Hon. Cooper called upon community leaders, parents, and the general public to assist the Authority by reporting illegal gambling hubs in their neighborhoods. He noted that public cooperation is essential for protecting families and maintaining a responsible gaming environment. According to Cooper, the NLA’s mission extends beyond mere law enforcement; it is a vital effort to protect the social fabric of Liberian communities.
Providing additional technical details, the NLA’s Director of Media, William Preston Gayflor, confirmed that inspections will continue throughout Monrovia and its environs. Gayflor highlighted that the presence of gambling devices in areas frequented by students is a major priority for the Authority. These inspections are intended to ensure that no gaming devices are situated in locations easily accessible to minors.
The operations in Montserrado County represent the first phase of a broader nationwide enforcement strategy. The NLA has indicated that similar raids will soon be extended to other counties across Liberia to ensure total compliance within the industry. Authorities believe that robust enforcement will not only protect the public but also support legitimate operators who follow the law by removing unfair, illegal competition from the market.
