NIGERIA: INEC Insists 2023 General Elections Will Hold As Scheduled
“The 2023 General Election will hold as scheduled. Any report to the contrary is not the official position of the Commission,” INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu said in Abuja on Wednesday, while presenting the 2023 final Register of Voters to political party leaders. This was in apparent reference to media reports, which had erroneously indicated that security concerns could lead to the postponement or cancellation of the polls.
Prof Yakubu said the compilation of the Register was “further affirmation of the Commission’s readiness” coupled with “repeated assurances by security agencies.” The 2023 final Register has 93.46m voters – 52.5% males and 47.5% females – up from 84m voters in 2019.
