NCHE Shuts Down 31 Illegal Higher Education Institutions

MONROVIA, June 26 – In a significant move to safeguard educational standards, the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has ordered the immediate closure of 31 unaccredited higher education institutions operating illegally across Liberia.

Speaking at a Ministry of Information press briefing on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, NCHE head Professor Edward Lama Wonkeryor described the affected schools as unauthorized and in direct violation of the country’s Higher Education Law. These institutions, ranging from health science colleges and theological seminaries to management schools, were reportedly offering academic credentials from diplomas to PhDs without formal approval from the Ministry of Education or NCHE.

“This decisive action is part of our broader effort to protect students from fraudulent institutions and to uphold the integrity of Liberia’s higher education system,” Professor Wonkeryor stated. “We cannot allow illegitimate programs to thrive at the expense of genuine academic progress.

The commission urged students currently enrolled in these institutions to immediately cease their studies and consult with NCHE for assistance in transitioning to accredited programs. Among the institutions specifically named in the official notice are:

  • Mertu Institute of Health and Laboratory Sciences – 72nd, Paynesville
  • Christ Laborers School System – Pipeline Road, Paynesville
  • Great Commission Christian University – Pipeline Road, Paynesville
  • Elizabeth Medical Institute of Health Sciences – Mount Barclay, Montserrado County

  • Elizabeth Medical Health Center – Mount Barclay
  • Leemor V. School of Health Assistant – Morris’ Farm
  • Vision Art Institute – Capitol Bypass
  • New Dimension Theological Seminary – St. Peter High School, Paynesville

The NCHE issued a strong warning to the public against enrolling in any of the named institutions and reiterated its commitment to continuing enforcement actions against any other unapproved entities providing post-secondary education.

“This is a clear message to those operating outside the law: academic fraud will not be tolerated,” Professor Wonkeryor added. This closure order is a key component of NCHE’s broader strategy to elevate educational standards and ensure all institutions operate within a regulated and accredited framework.
