Monrovia, Liberia – May 1, 2025 – The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) has officially commenced a nationwide humanitarian initiative with a significant donation of food and non-food items to inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison. This marks the beginning of a broader campaign aimed at reaching vulnerable populations throughout Liberia, as announced during the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism’s regular press briefing today.
NFAA Director General Boakai Sirleaf outlined the agency’s ambitious plan to decentralize food distribution efforts across the nation. “This initiative is just the beginning,” stated Director Sirleaf. “We are committed to reaching other regions of Liberia, particularly areas where the need is most critical. With strong collaboration from our development partners and the support of the government, we can achieve this national goal.”
The donated supplies are intended to alleviate pressure on Liberia’s overstretched correctional system and include a range of essential items. Director Sirleaf emphasized that this initiative is rooted in the agency’s mission to address humanitarian needs despite existing financial limitations.
He disclosed that the agency’s initial budget was a modest USD 1,024, primarily allocated for salaries. However, recent support from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, under the leadership of Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, has led to a slight improvement in funding availability.
“With limited resources, our response has largely been focused on emergencies up to this point,” Sirleaf noted. “But our long-term vision is to ensure that food assistance reaches all corners of Liberia.”
Joining Director Sirleaf at the press briefing was NFAA’s Deputy Director General for Administration, Bob Y. Kartoe, who echoed the agency’s appeal for stronger partnerships and international cooperation to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the initiative.
Sirleaf underscored that the donation to Monrovia Central Prison demonstrates the agency’s unwavering commitment to supporting underserved communities. He urged both national and international partners to come forward and collaborate with the NFAA.
“We implore our partners to join us in this endeavor to extend humanitarian assistance across the country,” he appealed. “Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need.” This latest move by the NFAA positions it as a crucial actor in Liberia’s humanitarian response efforts, with plans already underway to extend similar aid to other institutions and vulnerable populations nationwide.
