There are more than a thousand long-term missing people in New Jersey. Some have been missing since childhood. Others were husbands and wives that up and vanished, leaving behind lingering questions.
Many of their cases seem like long shots, but their loved ones β and police β keep looking.
For the last two years, the New Jersey State Police’s missing persons unit has held an event at universities around the state, Missing In New Jersey, to connect the families of these long-term missing persons and collect more evidence from their cases.
Last year’s event led to DNA samples that solved a seven-year-old cold case. This year’s, held in May, brought in new DNA evidence that’s still being analyzed by a laboratory, according to Sgt. Joel Trella, the head of the missing persons unit.
Authorities have compiled hundreds of cases in an online database at the State Police website, NJSP.org.
