The Suakoko Highway linking Monrovia to Gbarnga has been reported as one of Liberia’s dangerous routes for road accidents.
According to the Liberia National Police (LNP), forty deaths and three-hundred injuries have so far occurred this year as a result of accidents on the Highway.
The high rate of deaths and injuries along the route has been attributed to defective vehicles, particularly taxis and heavy duty vehicles, excessive speed and lack of road safety knowledge among others.
A 2018 World Health Organization report also showed that Liberia is having the worst safety record worldwide with an estimated 35.9 percent deaths per one-thousand people.
At the same time Montserrado, Margibi and Grand Bassa Counties reportedly have the highest rate of road collision and fatal crashes.
Meanwhile, the LNP Chief of Traffic, Alphonso Binda, is calling for concerted efforts to curtail the high rate the high rate of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents.
Commissioner Binda said:” Accident is an unforeseen Circumstance, but the stressed the need for more road safety awareness and education to save lives.”
He spoke with ELBC recently at a local entertainment center in Paynesville City when the LNP and partners among others hosted a road safety awareness show.
Remarking at the program, the Advisor for Deutche Geselschaft fur Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Capacity Development in the Transport Sector Project, Yana Tumakova, said the organization would continue to work along with the police to raise awareness on road safety.
Madam Tumakova said:” The involvement of comedians in the road safety awareness campaign is to ensure people grasp the message and avoid accidents.”
