Ministry of Health Sends 17 Liberian Nurses to Kenya for Specialized Training

By Christian Appleton

Monrovia, Liberia – The Ministry of Health (MOH) today bid farewell to a cohort of seventeen Liberian nurses who have departed to pursue a two-year specialized training program at the Kenyatta National Hospital School of Nursing in Nairobi, Kenya.

This training, part of the Ministry’s broader effort to strengthen the national health workforce, is sponsored by the World Bank–funded Institutional Foundations to Improve Services for Health (IFISH) Project and the Health Security Project (HeSP). These initiatives are focused on building capacity in Liberia’s healthcare system through investments in human resources, infrastructure, and service delivery.

The nurses, carefully selected from public health facilities across the country, will receive advanced instruction in Oncology, Trauma and Emergency, Critical Care, Neonatal, and Nephrology Nursing—disciplines identified as critical to meeting Liberia’s evolving healthcare needs.

During the farewell ceremony, a senior MOH official lauded the nurses for their commitment, encouraging them to serve as ambassadors of excellence. “You are leaving not just to study, but to return and transform the delivery of specialized healthcare in Liberia,” the official remarked, highlighting the program’s importance for the country’s long-term health goals.

The Ministry also expressed gratitude to the World Bank and other partners for their continued support in enhancing Liberia’s human capital in the health sector. MOH officials noted that such partnerships are crucial for addressing the shortage of specialized healthcare professionals and enhancing the resilience of the national healthcare system.

For the beneficiaries, this opportunity represents a professional milestone and a chance to make a meaningful impact back home. One nurse expressed heartfelt appreciation, noting that the training will equip them with the skills to handle complex health conditions that are currently often referred abroad.

Upon completion of the two-year program, the nurses will return to Liberia and be deployed across key health facilities. They are expected to play essential roles in improving patient care, strengthening service delivery, and mentoring other nurses. Their contribution is anticipated to significantly boost the Ministry’s drive to ensure access to quality, safe, and specialized healthcare services for all Liberians.

The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to the continued investment in the professional development of Liberian health workers, emphasizing that human resource development remains a central pillar of the nation’s post-pandemic recovery and health system strengthening agenda.
