MONROVIA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia has issued an official clarification following the Government of the United States’ decision to place an indefinite pause on the issuance of certain immigrant visas. This policy shift, which affects nationals from seventy-five countries, including Liberia, is scheduled to take effect on January 21, 2026. According to the Ministry, the measure is linked to an ongoing review of United States visa screening and vetting procedures under the public charge rule.
The Ministry emphasized that this new action applies exclusively to immigrant visa categories and does not extend to non-immigrant visas. Travelers seeking visas for tourism, business, education, exchange programs, and other temporary purposes will see no change, as these categories continue to be processed normally. Furthermore, the Ministry noted that all existing valid visas remain in full effect and have not been revoked by this policy change.
The pause specifically targets visas that grant permanent residence status in the United States, such as family-based and employment-based visas, as well as the Diversity Visa program. The Ministry stressed that this decision should not be interpreted as a visa ban against Liberian citizens, as access to non-immigrant travel remains completely unchanged. This distinction is critical to preventing unnecessary anxiety among the public.
In response to the potential concerns of Liberians seeking permanent residence, the Government of Liberia is actively engaging U.S. authorities through diplomatic channels. These efforts are aimed at gaining clearer information on the scope and duration of the pause while advocating for the fair and transparent consideration of all affected Liberian applicants. The Ministry confirmed that immigrant visa interviews are continuing without disruption, though the final issuance of approved visas is temporarily paused pending new guidelines from the U.S. government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the public to rely solely on official communications from credible government sources for accurate updates. It reassures the public that travel for study, business, and tourism remains open and that holders of valid United States visas may continue to travel in accordance with current U.S. immigration laws and regulations.
