Maryland Gets New Superintendent, Henry B. Cole Inducted

In a ceremony brimming with anticipation and optimism, Hon. Henry B. Cole, along with a dedicated corps of officers, assumed the mantle of leadership as the newly appointed Superintendent of Maryland County. The induction, held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the Administration Building in Harper City, Maryland County, marked a significant milestone in the county’s governance.
The auspicious occasion was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Madam Selena P. Mappy, Deputy Minister for Operations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who presided over the induction. Serving as the Master of Ceremony was Rocheford R. Gardiner, the esteemed manager of Phoenix FM, 102.7.
Among those inducted alongside Superintendent Cole were Hon. Fred H. Bartoe, appointed as Development Superintendent, and Hon. Stevenson B. Dweh, assuming the role of Finance Officer. Their collective commitment to the welfare and progress of Maryland County resonated throughout the ceremony.
The event attracted a diverse array of attendees, reflecting the rich tapestry of Maryland’s community, including officials of the county, Elders and Traditional Council, women’s groups, youth organizations, Tubman University faculty and students, representatives from the Muslim and Christian communities, as well as civil society organizations and stakeholders from various sectors.
In his farewell address, outgoing officer in charge, Hon. T. Tabie Thompson, expressed gratitude for the privilege of serving the county and highlighted the pressing issue of a land dispute between communities within the county. He called for swift and decisive action to resolve the dispute, underscoring the importance of unity and reconciliation in moving the county forward.
During the turnover ceremony, Hon. Thompson also shed light on the logistical challenges faced by the office of the superintendent, emphasizing the need for essential resources such as computers and printers to effectively discharge duties.
In a symbolic gesture, Hon. Thompson presented Superintendent Cole with the Liberian flag, representing unity and inclusivity, a Bible symbolizing the importance of moral leadership, and a gavel of authority, signifying the solemn responsibility entrusted to him by the people of Maryland County.
Minister Selena P. Mappy, representing the Ministry of International Affairs, delivered heartfelt greetings and admonitions to Superintendent Cole, urging him to lead with fairness, impartiality, and a dedication to the common good. She emphasized the paramount importance of peace and unity in fostering development and progress within the county.
In his inaugural address, Superintendent Cole expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his people and pledged to work tirelessly to address the needs and aspirations of all Marylanders. He called for unity and cooperation across political, social, and religious divides, underscoring his commitment to restoring the integrity and advancing the prosperity of Maryland County.
Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, President of William V.S Tubman University, extended warm congratulations to the newly inducted officials, reaffirming the university’s steadfast support for the county’s progress and development. Dr. Menjay outlined key priorities, including academic excellence, student success, brand prestige, and entrepreneurial enterprise, underscoring the university’s role as a catalyst for positive change and innovation.
