Workers of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) have resolved to return to work following the intervention of Labour Minister Cllr. Charles H. Gibson.
According a Labour Ministry Statement, the LWSC workers reached the decision on Monday, November 30, 2020 when the leadership of the Workers Union and their National Union (National Beverages and Industrial Workers Union of Liberia) met with officials of the Ministry of Labour in Monrovia.
Speaking during the meeting Minister Gibson informed the aggrieved LWSC workers that the Government of Liberia is taking into consideration all of their concerns raised and it is doing everything possible to amicably resolve the situation.
On the issue of the seven months salary arrears owned the workers by the management, Minister Gibson said that consultations are ongoing with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the LWSC Management to pay two- month salaries before December 8, 2020 and another two-month salaries before the Christmas.
He noted following the two payments, the Government of Liberia will schedule a new payment date for the balance three months in order to clear all of the arrears owned them.
Meanwhile, the parties representing the Government of Liberia led by Labour Minister Cllr. Charles H. Gibson and the LWSC Workers Union along with their National Union (National Beverages and Industrial Workers Union of Liberia) reached an agreement that:
- Workers will immediately return to work and restore all services as it relates to water and sewer supply across the country;
- That Ministry of Labour will work with the Management of the LWSC to ensure that needy logistic as well as safety materials are provided to the workers;
- That there will be no arbitrary dismissal of workers due of the strike action; and
- That the workers will ensure the protection of all LWSC properties.
In separate remarks, the Chairman of the LWSC Workers Union, Mr. Isaiah K. Dongbo and the Secretary General of the National Beverages and Industrial Workers Union of Liberia, Madam Ophelia N. Carpenter hailed the Minister of Labour for his intervention and pledged their commitments in adherence to the agreements reached between the Ministry and workers in the interest of industrial peace and harmony.
