LWSC to Demolish Illegal Structures on Sewer Lines to Restore Monrovia’s Sanitation
Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has announced a decisive plan to demolish structures illegally erected on sewer lines throughout Monrovia. Managing Director Mohammed Ali revealed the initiative during the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism’s regular press briefing on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, emphasizing that the action is crucial for improving sanitation and restoring the city’s vital drainage system.
Ali stressed that the operation is solely focused on ensuring effective water and sewer management, and is not intended to target specific individuals or businesses. “We are asking the Ministry of Public Works to assist us in demolishing structures that have been illegally constructed on sewerage lines,” Ali stated. “This is not about targeting individuals, whether big or small, it is about ensuring that Monrovia and its surrounding areas remain clean and well-structured.”
The LWSC’s plan aligns with the government’s broader urban development agenda and its commitment to enhancing public health standards. “This is not a witch hunt; it is about making Monrovia and its environs beautiful. No one should stand in the way of development,” Ali asserted.
The demolition exercise will commence with structures located behind the Corridor Photos Studio on Broad Street, with the Ministry of Public Works taking the lead in the operation. Ali explained that Monrovia’s sewer system, originally built in 1953 during President William V.S. Tubman’s administration, has been severely compromised by unauthorized construction.
“This old-age practice must stop. People need to stop building on sewerage lines. We don’t need to shift blame; we need to take responsibility and act now,” he warned, highlighting the severe blockages and sanitation issues caused by these illegal structures.
Ali also reaffirmed LWSC’s commitment to restoring water services across Liberia, including ongoing efforts to improve water facilities in Gbarpolu County. He reiterated President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s vision for a cleaner and more developed Liberia, urging citizens to support the government’s initiatives.
“We must follow the President’s footsteps in making Liberia beautiful,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of collective action in achieving a better future for the nation.
