Liberia’s George Weah Opens Presidential Quest As Former Liverpool El Hadji Diouf Also Craves For The Presidency

Mr. El Hadji Diouf: former Liverpool man open to becoming PRESIDENT of his homeland Senegal

El Hadji Diouf admits his future lies in politics – with the former Liverpool man open to becoming PRESIDENT of his homeland Senegal.

The winger, who is considered one of the most disliked players to represent the Reds, is believed to be working in the country’s capital Dakar as a government goodwill ambassador, as well as sporting advisor to current president Macky Sall.

Diouf is a supporter of Sall, and has taken a keen interest in politics since his retirement from football in 2015.

The 37-year-old, who spent three years at Anfield, says he has been inspired by George Weah’s success, after the former Milan striker became president of Liberia last year.

Speaking on a potential political career, Diouf said: “I am looking after myself and my family. For many years I use to think about football but I have a new career and it is a political career.

“I have taken the decision to do politics because I have people waiting for me to change things in my country and I’m ready to do that because I want to be the soldier of the youngsters.

“My future is defined. In the next two years I’ll be joining politics, because I know from that point I can change a lot in football. I have a lot of passion for politics, and I have people in Senegal who are mentoring me. That is the future for me, because a lot of Senegalese people are able to listen to me.

“I took high-level coaching courses, but decided not to continue since I have better plans for things I want to do.”

In December, the outspoken ex-Red said he would be open to succeeding Sall when the current incumbent steps down.

“Why not? We have come to stay, we are a group with ambitions for our country,” he said.

Diouf scored six goals in 80 appearances for Liverpool following his £10million move in 2002, but his time on Merseyside – and in English football in general, with spells at Leeds, Sunderland and Bolton, amongst others – was mired in controversy.
