Liberian Senate Confirms Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as New Chief Justice
Monrovia, Liberia – July 17, 2025 – In a decisive move, the Plenary of the Liberian Senate, the highest decision-making body of the legislative branch, has overwhelmingly voted to confirm Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the next Chief Justice of Liberia. This confirmation follows his recent nomination by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Justice Gbeisay will succeed outgoing Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Youh, who has reached the constitutionally mandated retirement age of seventy. Article 72(b) of the 1986 Liberian Constitution stipulates the retirement age for Supreme Court Justices and judges of subordinate courts of record, with a provision allowing for an extension if necessary to conclude pending judicial duties.
The Senate’s decision came during its regular session held today at the Capitol Building. The confirmation was a direct result of a favorable report submitted by the Senate’s Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims and Petition. The motion for Justice Gbeisay’s confirmation was put forward by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon. Out of the Senators present during the sitting, a resounding 24 voted in favor of the motion, signaling strong support for Justice Gbeisay’s appointment to the nation’s highest judicial office.
Justice Gbeisay’s confirmation marks a significant moment for Liberia’s judiciary, ushering in a new era of leadership for the Supreme Court. His extensive experience as an Associate Justice is expected to bring continuity and stability to the country’s legal system.
