LIBERIA: WHO Donates Land Cruiser Jeep To Health Ministry Value US$130K

The World Health Organization (WHO) through the government of Germany this week presented a brand new Land Cruiser Jeep vehicle valued US$130,000 to the Ministry of Health to strengthen the country’s infectious disease center.

Speaking at the ceremony, May 17, 2023, the Country Representative of World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Peter Clement said the vehicle would help to assist the country management and boost its health sector in Liberia, he stated

Dr. Clement said the vehicle will enhance the country’s health system and strengthen case management which is critical in the country.

Clement also noted that the donation was made possible by the general contribution from the government of Germany; he said the Land Cruiser-Pick-up will be used to coordinate the oxygen plants from one point to another in the country.

German Ambassador to Liberia Dr. Jakob Haselhuber disclosed that the donation was part of the German government commitment in supporting the Liberia health sector, He said the government health system in Liberia and that the donation was a step in the right direction.

The German Ambassador said of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country still reports a high number of health records for people infected with the disease, the German government is committed to supporting the Liberia health sector and quality of care and better patient care in Liberia. 

For her part, Minister of Health Dr. Wilhemina S. Jallah said the government of President George M. Weah is pleased with the kind gesture from the German government; she said the vehicles would be used to provide oxygen in and around Monrovia while the other plants are operating.

She also disclosed that during the Covid-19 pandemic the star based oxygen plant was opened as an infectious disease unit because not only Covid-19 affects Liberia; we have other diseases like the Lassa fever among others that need to be treated at the center there.

 “We have already received the equipment for the intensive care unit that we will be setting up shortly with proper training for our staff in the health sectors in Liberia.

The donation is also a testament to the strong partnership between the WHO, the government of Germany, and the Ministry of Health of Liberia, she said
