Liberia Urges Nuclear Powers to Honor Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Commitments

NEW YORK — Liberia has reiterated its full support for global nuclear disarmament, the peaceful application of atomic energy, and multilateralism as the most viable approach to international peace and security.

Presenting Liberia’s position during the UN High-Level Plenary Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lewis G. Brown, II, urged non-signatory states to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and called on nuclear-armed nations to fulfill their commitments under Article VI of the treaty.

Ambassador Brown emphasized that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, describing the NPT as an essential cornerstone of global stability. He warned that security built on mutual annihilation is not true peace, but merely an armistice with catastrophe, noting that even a single nuclear detonation would cause severe, widespread civilian harm and catastrophic damage beyond the scope of any humanitarian response.

Reaffirming Liberia’s dedication to global compliance, the ambassador highlighted support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verification frameworks and advocated for expanding the peaceful uses of nuclear technology in vital non-military sectors such as economic development, agriculture, and healthcare.

Liberia firmly stands for diplomacy over brinkmanship, humanity over hegemony, and a shared global future over guaranteed destruction. The appeal comes at a critical juncture, with over 12,100 nuclear warheads remaining in global stockpiles—more than 80 percent of which are held by just two nuclear-armed powers.
