Liberia School of Law Wins Inaugural ECOWAS Moot Court Championship

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – The Liberia School of Law (LSL) has clinched a historic victory in the first-ever ECOWAS Moot Court Competition, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Representing Liberia were law students Peace Khasu and Abigail Dorbor, who showcased exceptional legal acumen and advocacy skills throughout the competition. The team was expertly coached by Professor Gerald Yeakula, whose guidance was pivotal to their triumph.
The path to victory was unconventional. In their opening match, LSL advanced by default after the Nigerian team failed to appear. They then faced a highly competitive match against Africa Nazarene University of Kenya, which ended in a tie. Both teams earned enough points to proceed to the finals.
The final round presented a unique structure, with LSL teaming up with the Felix Houphouët-Boigny University of Côte d’Ivoire to face a joint team from the African Nazarene University of Kenya and the University of Bukavu from the Democratic Republic of Congo. After a spirited and intellectually charged debate, the Liberian-Ivorian team was declared the winner by a panel of judges, securing LSL’s place in regional legal history.
Following the victory, the President of the Liberia School of Law issued a statement, congratulating the winning team and their coach. “On behalf of our Board, faculty, students, and staff, I congratulate Peace, Abigail, and Professor Yeakula for a job very well done,” the statement read.
The ECOWAS Moot Court Competition is designed to foster legal scholarship and advocacy among the next generation of African legal professionals. LSL’s win not only brings pride to Liberia but also highlights the school’s growing stature in international legal education.
