The chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mulbah Morlu, has submitted to police probe to say what he knows, or not, of the alleged assault on Deputy Police Inspector General for Operations in a recent post by-election violence, according to police spokesman Moses Carter.
Deputy Inspector General Marvin Sackor was assaulted allegedly by supporters of the CDC near the party’s headquarters when there was a standoff between them and people loyal to the opposition Liberty Party amid the announcement of the Senatorial and Representative by-election results by the National Elections Commission (NEC).
When he appeared at the central police headquarters on Monday, said Carter, CDC’s Morlu expressed regret over the attack on the person of Deputy IG Sackor and vowed his leadership’s willingness to cooperate with police investigators to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Morlu was invited for questioning together with his partisan, Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray, but he told the police that Gray was out of the country at the moment and could not come along.
However, Morlu is said to have assured investigators that Rep. Gray will return this week when the two of them will make an appearance before police and provide detailed information on those who are accused of perpetrating the alleged assault on the deputy police chief.
In the wake of the recent elections-related violence in Montserrado County, President George Weah ordered the Ministry of Justice to mandate the Police to conduct investigations to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
When the Inspector General of Police, Col. Patrick Sudue appeared before the Liberian Senate last Thursday, he informed the lawmakers that police had already contacted Chairman Morlu and Rep. Gray—all officials of CDC—to assist with the on-going investigation.
Consequently, the two CDC stalwarts were given up to Monday (August 26), at noon, to appear at the central police headquarters for questioning relative to Sackor’s ordeal.
The police say the investigation continues.
In the face of the electoral violence, President Weah, in a key address to the nation, warned politicians and their supporters, irrespective of parties, to refrain from inciting violence or “face the full weight of the law” for disturbing the peace and instilling fear in citizens.
