After more than 35 years without a resident diplomatic mission in India, Liberia has officially reopened its Embassy in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the restoration and strengthening of bilateral relations between both nations.
Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti is currently in New Delhi to formally inaugurate the Embassy on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Government, and the people of Liberia. The reopening ends more than three decades without a permanent Liberian diplomatic presence in India, following the mission’s closure during past geopolitical and internal challenges.
While successive Liberian administrations worked to restore the diplomatic mission—recognizing India’s growing importance as an economic, strategic, and development partner—the Boakai administration has now completed this longstanding national objective.
Minister Nyanti described the reopening as a major diplomatic achievement that aligns with President Boakai’s commitment to advancing Liberia’s national interests through active foreign engagement. She stressed that the mission will serve as a permanent diplomatic home and a catalyst for translating international partnerships into tangible economic benefits for Liberian citizens.
The resident mission is expected to deliver immediate consular advantages, particularly for the growing number of Liberian students pursuing higher education and technical training in India, as well as citizens traveling there for specialized medical care.
Beyond consular support, the Embassy will serve as a platform for economic diplomacy—aiming to attract Indian investment, expand bilateral trade, and facilitate direct commercial partnerships between Liberian and Indian businesses. The mission will also work to deepen cooperation in key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, technology, infrastructure, education, and human capacity building.
The Government of Liberia expressed deep appreciation to the Government of India for its support in facilitating the reopening of the Embassy, characterizing the historic occasion as the beginning of a vibrant new chapter in Liberia–India relations.
