Muslims in Gbarnga, Bong County are calling on county officials to intervene to ensure the immediate release of two of their brethren whom they claim were forcibly initiated into the Poro Society.
The Poro Society is a men’s secret society in in Liberia, that can also be found in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast.
Speaking to a team of reporters in Gbarnga recently on behalf of their kinsmen, Messrs. Solomani Swaray and Seku Lansana Kaba said, two of their brothers were last Thursday coerced to join the Poro Society which, they noted, is not in the interest of peace and security in the county.
Messrs. Swaray and Kaba indicated that even though they will remain peaceful, they are calling on county authorities, including Superintendent Esther Yamah Walker and the county Legislative Caucus, to immediately intervene to ensure the release of their two brothers without marks on them.
According to the two spokespersons, they have formally informed Internal Affairs Ministry officials about the situation, stressing that the matter needs to be taken seriously in order to maintain the peace Bong County currently enjoys.
The men disclosed that they have filed a complaint with the Liberia National Police and awaiting speedy intervention following several days of campaigning for the immediate release of their two brothers.
They stressed that their concern should not be ignored.
Meanwhile, Messrs. Swaway and Kaba have disclosed that they have the maximum support of the Muslim Council of Bong County, which they believe will enable them to pursue their case to the fullest.
They, however, stressed that because of peace they will remain calm and wait for the response of the Liberia National Police and the Internal Affairs Ministry on the issue.
