Liberia Leads A3 Security Council Talks

NEW YORK — Liberia has chaired the 7th High-Level Ministerial Meeting of the Africa-Three (A3) members of the United Nations Security Council in New York, leading strategic discussions focused on strengthening continental coordination and maximizing Africa’s collective influence over global decisions impacting regional peace and security.

Representing Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ibrahim Nyei presided over the session held at the Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union to the United Nations.

The high-level gathering convened diplomatic delegates from Liberia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago to review existing operational mechanisms and assess the effectiveness of Africa’s unified stance within the Security Council.

While participating delegations reaffirmed their commitment to institutionalizing tighter joint coordination, the deliberations underscored ongoing challenges in converting shared African positions into decisive leverage during UN Security Council negotiations.

Deputy Minister Nyei stated that the A3 coalition agreed to leverage Africa’s collective diplomatic agency more assertively, emphasizing the imperative of maintaining an unyielding, unified voice on all security matters relative to the continent.

A primary focus of the ministerial agenda centered on the practical implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2719, which establishes the framework for financing and supporting African Union-led peace support operations. The emphasis on Resolution 2719 reflects growing concerns over sustainable funding mechanisms for continental peacekeeping missions amid complex and evolving regional security crises.

Delegates reiterated the strategic necessity for African Security Council members to harmonize their diplomatic positions prior to major Council deliberations, warning that fragmented national approaches risk diluting the continent’s influence on the global stage.

By chairing the high-level meeting, Liberia highlighted its expanding diplomatic leadership within the UN Security Council while advancing core priorities aligned with Africa’s peace, security, and governance architecture.

Deputy Minister Nyei concluded that the A3 members remain firmly committed to joint action, with all participating nations pledged to work collaboratively in advancing Africa’s strategic priorities at the United Nations.
