Liberia Launches National Campaign Against Mob Violence
Monrovia, Liberia – April 19, 2025 – The Government of Liberia, under the leadership of Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, today, announced the launch of a National Anti-Mob Violence Campaign. This initiative aims to address the rising concerns over mob violence, which threatens democratic principles and the rule of law in the nation.
“This government will not condone or tolerate mob violence. It is a violation of our laws and a violation of democratic principles and values,” stated Minister Tweh.
The campaign, which kicked off in Montserrado today, seeks to rebuild trust in the justice system and cultivate a culture of respect for the rule of law. It will engage communities through dialogues and educational activities, empowering citizens to seek justice through lawful means.
The primary goals of the campaign are to encourage citizens to pursue justice through appropriate legal channels and to promote a safe Liberia conducive to investment, economic growth, and social stability.
The Ministry of Justice is collaborating with civil society organizations, community leaders, the Liberia Motorcycle Union, and the Federation of Liberian Youth to raise awareness through workshops, talk shows, and community-based dialogues. These efforts will focus on breaking down misconceptions and fostering peaceful resolutions.
Minister Tweh emphasized the importance of community involvement: “The real strength lies not in taking matters into our own hands, but in seeking justice collaboratively within our legal framework. Each one of us has a role to play in restoring harmony and trust within our communities.”
The government has pledged decisive action against mob violence, with the Ministry of Justice and state security agencies committed to eradicating this issue from Liberian society.
The UNDP and the Liberia Chamber of Commerce are also assisting and collaborating in this campaign.
