Liberia Intensifies Diplomatic Push for UN Security Council Seat

Monrovia, Liberia – May 22, 2025 – The Liberian government is significantly advancing its bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a move signaling a renewed focus on enhancing the nation’s global standing and attracting international investment.

Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cllr. Jeddi M. Armah, announced today at a press briefing held by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism that Liberia’s campaign is gaining considerable traction worldwide.

“We are on the right track,” stated Cllr. Armah. “Our presence and credibility in the international community are increasing, and we are optimistic about our chances of securing the non-permanent seat.”

The initiative is being spearheaded by Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, who also serves as Dean of the President’s Cabinet. According to Armah, Minister Nyanti is currently engaged in high-level diplomatic discussions abroad, actively rallying support for Liberia’s candidacy.

Armah also acknowledged the crucial, behind-the-scenes contributions of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Grand Bassa County Senator Gbehzohngar Milton Findley, commending their persistent lobbying efforts.

“If successful, Liberia’s election to the Security Council will not only elevate our international profile but also stimulate investment and tourism, ushering in a new era of growth and diplomatic influence,” Armah emphasized.

He further stressed that the government is fully committed to this endeavor, with extensive diplomatic groundwork already underway in various world capitals. The bid, Armah noted, underscores Liberia’s dedication to global peace, multilateralism, and the foundational principles of international cooperation.

Liberia is vying for one of the ten rotating non-permanent seats on the 15-member Security Council, an influential body responsible for critical decisions concerning international peace and security.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has personally appealed to the international community, urging United Nations member states to endorse Liberia’s candidacy for the 2026–2027 term. In a statement delivered at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s historical legacy as a founding member of both the UN and its predecessor, the League of Nations.

“Liberia’s history is closely intertwined with the ideals of the United Nations,” President Boakai affirmed. “Our unwavering commitment to peace, conflict resolution, and the promotion of self-determination across Africa is well documented.”

He further underscored Liberia’s active role in the establishment of key regional organizations, including the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Mano River Union (MRU), all of which play vital roles in fostering cooperation, stability, and development across the continent.

As Liberia continues its diplomatic campaign, officials remain confident that the nation’s long-standing contributions to international peace and diplomacy will earn it a seat at one of the world’s most powerful decision-making tables.
