An Imam of the Gurley Street Mosque in central Monrovia has urged Liberians to ensure that peace and security are maintained in the country as a guarantee to development of the West African nation.
Imam Isiaka Sumaworo stated that without peace in the country, it will be difficult for government to foster socio-economic development that would better the lives of the Liberian people.
Imam Sumaworo made the statement Sunday when Liberian Muslims joined other Muslims around the world in observance of ‘Abraham Day’ held at the Gurley street Mosque in Monrovia.
The day, according to Islamic accounts, represents the time when Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) went to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismael (Ismail) in order to keep his word to Allah (God).
Te sacrifice was aborted when Allah himself intervened to stop the process, terming Prophet Abraham as faithful servant, thus sparing the life of Prophet Ismael.
Since that time, Muslims celebrate this day as both a tradition and a duty to Allah. The festival lasts four or more days, depending on the country in which it is celebrated.
According to Sumaworo, Liberia has being through difficult times over the years through the act of violation that undermines socio and economic development and should not be repeated in the nation.
He stressed that if people problems with the ruling leadership, they should approach the leadership constructively rather than creating panic and uncertainty in the society.
Imam Sumaworo pointed out that the Islam forbids Muslims from engaging into any act of protest against any leadership be it government or otherwise, urging Muslims to respect the leadership in the country whether wrong or right.
He asserted that young Liberians should desist from protest which could undermine the peace and stability of the State, noting that they are the future leaders to transform the development of Liberia.
He said the Liberian youth should use their time wisely through productive engagements to enhance their capacities in various endeavours that could benefit them in the near future.
Imam Sumaworo emphasized that the peace of Liberia is critical towards addressing the political, economic and social problems confronting the people and nation.
