LIBERIA: Heath Workers In Grand Kru County Protest For 9 Months’ Salary Arrears

Health workers protest in Grand Kru County

Dozens of health workers mainly Supervisors in the southeastern county of Grand Kru have staged a protest in demand of what they claimed nine months’ arrears owed them by government.

The health workers who angrily blocked the main entrance of the of County Health Center in Barclayville City were seen with placards calling on the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Health to immediately address their plight.

The protest comes with just days to Christmas Festivity in the country and the first since Dr. Woyee Wreh took over as County Health Officer.

The aggrieved health protester in their number gathered in front of the County Health Team Compound prevented the movement of people and vehicles including those belonging to Grand Kru Health Team and health partners.

According to our reporter in the County, those health workers along with dozens of their supervisors came from several communities within the county with placards called on the Liberian government to speedily come to their aid in settling their salaries obligation.

Speaking with the head of the protesters, Josephine Korba indicated that the Minister of Health and UNICEF are in the position to settle their salary arrears, but wondered why they are reneging on the issue.

“We are professional people who have worked for the period of nine months serving the county in providing good health care delivery services, but we are not treated fairly as professional people, Madam Kobar lamented”.

According to her, the Ministry of Health owed them for the period from April to December 2020.

“We have written several communications to the County Health Team to address our salary issue, but were given less attention which prompted our protest the Health Practitioner pointed out in an angry tone.

Receiving the position statement, Grand Kru newly assigned County Health Officer, Dr. J. Woyee Wreh appreciated the aggrieved Community Health Supervisors for their protest which went in a peaceful manner without resulting to the damaging of properties.

Dr. Wreh told the protesting health workers that he and the government through the Ministry of Health acknowledged the numerous sacrifices of the health workers to ensure health care delivery services to the people of Grand Kru county.

“We regret the situation, it is disheartening, worrisome to the County Health Team that our Community Health Supervisors will work diligently in the period of nine months and they are not pay, Dr. Wreh sounded”.

Dr. Wreh assured that as head of Grand Kru county Health Team, we will communicate with the relevant authorities who are responsible for the salary payment of our Community Health Supervisors in the county.
