LIBERIA: Greenville Teen Re-Arrested Seven Months After Jailbreak
GREENVILLE, – Corrections officers in Greenville, Sinoe County, have re-arrested pre-trial detainee, Webster Wea, 19, who along with others broke jail seven months ago, and sent him back to prison to await trial during the next term of court.
The teen joined the ranks of 21 other inmates who broke jail in December 2018, but he was apprehended last Tuesday on Mississippi Street in Greenville, bringing to three the number re-arrested after the jailbreak.
This means 18 of the escapees are still on the run, and the joint security team in Sinoe and beyond has declared them ‘wanted’ amid an on-going manhunt since then. Wea faces charges of burglary.
Corrections chief Ruphus Chea said suspect Wea was further charged for escaping legal custody, citing Article 46.3 of the Penal Law of Liberia.
Wea told the Liberia News Agency upon his re-arrest that: “my escape from prison was not intentional; it was so because I had fever in there. I was really sick in jail for three month, so I said I shouldn’t allow myself to die here (in prison) because somebody accused me of burglary.”
In 2012, 60 inmates broke jail at the National Palace of Corrections located on the outskirts of Zwedru City, in Sinoe’s neighboring Grand Gedeh County, but 21 were soon re-arrested as a result of a massive hunt launched by security forces in the forests, including areas that border Cote d’Ivoire.
