(LINA) – The Government of Liberia through the court is considering indicting the former Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL),Tolbert Nyenswah and his Controller Henry Blark consistent with the Criminal Procedure Law of Liberia.
Nyenswah and Blark have reportedly left the country after Criminal Court ‘C’ Resident Judge Blamo Dixon placed a travel ban on the duo as a result of government lawyers’ request for a Writ of Ne-Exeat Republica.
Montserrado County Chief Prosecutor, Cllr. Edwin Martin, on Monday confirmed the exit of Nyenswah and his Controller Blark from the country as what, he said, could be a sign of guilt and as such the only alternative is to indict them during the coming November Term of Court.
Meanwhile, Martin revealed that the indictment of Nyenswah and Blark will be accompanied by an international arrest warrant through Interpol to compel the two men to return to the country to face criminal prosecution.
The National Public Health Institute was established in January 2017 by an Act of the National Legislature to prevent and control public health threats in the post 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic that devastated Liberia’s public health system.
Nyenswah served as the first Director-General.
Prior to his appointment at the NPHIL, he headed the Incident Management System responsible for coordinating the National Ebola Response activities that brought the epidemic to an end.
Under his stewardship at NPHIL, Nyenswah succeeded in securing from the United States Government and the World Bank Group, over US$20 million to construct the National Reference Laboratory and NPHIL headquarters in Congo Town, still under construction.
NPHIL also secured US$15 million from the World Bank for a three-year epidemiologic surveillance activity throughout Liberia.
