Liberia Forges Transformative Port Modernization Deal with Morocco’s Tanger Med
Monrovia, Liberia – The Government of Liberia, through the National Port Authority (NPA), has embarked on a significant new phase of maritime and economic development with the official signing of a transformative port modernization agreement. The landmark deal, inked in Tangier, involves Tanger Med Engineering, a subsidiary of Morocco’s globally recognized Tanger Med Port Authority. This agreement sets in motion the comprehensive implementation of a long-awaited Master Plan for both the Freeport of Monrovia and the Port of Buchanan, with the overarching goal of elevating Liberia’s port infrastructure to world-class standards.
Spearheaded by the NPA under the proactive leadership of Managing Director Hon. Sekou Hussein Dukuly, this historic accord underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and institutional reform as central pillars of Liberia’s maritime strategy.
According to a release from the NPA, the Master Plan envisions a reimagined Freeport of Monrovia as a cutting-edge 21st-century logistics and maritime hub—characterized by efficiency, digital integration, and global competitiveness. Developed through months of close technical collaboration, the Master Plan details a phased modernization of critical port facilities. This includes the redevelopment of container terminals, cargo berths, and warehousing zones. Furthermore, the plan incorporates the integration of state-of-the-art smart logistics platforms, advanced security systems, and sustainable renewable energy solutions.
The signing ceremony witnessed the presence of a high-level Liberian delegation, including key legislative figures such as Senator Momo T. Cyrus, Chairman of the National Security Committee of the Liberian Senate; Representative Austin B. Taylor, Chairman of the Maritime Committee of the House of Representatives; and Representative Sekou Kanneh, Chairman of the Executive Committee.
Also integral to the forging of this agreement were Liberia’s Ambassador to Morocco, Johnson J. Fayiah, and Mr. Emmanuel LARMEH, Chargé d’Affaires at the Liberian Embassy in Rabat, both of whom played crucial diplomatic roles.
As the construction and implementation phases are set to commence, the NPA’s vision, championed by Managing Director Dukuly and fully supported by the Government of Liberia, stands as a powerful demonstration of strategic foresight and the benefits of international collaboration. The Master Plans for the Monrovia and Buchanan Ports transcend mere engineering blueprints; they represent a determined national effort to unlock Liberia’s economic potential and firmly establish its position in Africa’s burgeoning trade landscape.
