LIBERIA: EU To Conduct Capacity Building Training For Liberian Journalists

The deputy head of the delegation of the European Union to Liberia Anders ARVIDSON has revealed that the EU Delegation to Liberia is planning to organize capacity building workshop for media practitioners in 2021.

According to the Deputy Head of The European Union Delegation, before then, the EU and it’s members States are planning to hosts meeting with media owners, editors, and practicing Journalists.

The EU Deputy head of Delegation made these commitment when he spoke at a program marking the Press Union of Liberia(PUL) 57th Anniversary in Voinjama, Lofa County.

Ander ARVIDSON also noted that Liberia is a vibrant society with freedom of expression. Noting further, the EU’s Deputy Head of Delegation said Liberia has a long history of defending press freedom and freedom of Media.

Providing emphasis on why he sees Liberia as a ” Vibrant Society with Freedom of Expression, the EU Deputy Chief of Mission said former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the first African head of State to sign up for the ‘Table Mountain Declaration in 2012.

In February 2019, under the current government, the Kamara Abdullah Kamara Act-On Press Freedom was signed into law. “It amended the Panel Law of 1978 and repealed the sections on criminal libel against the President, sedition, and criminal malevolence,” ARVIDSON said.

Making further remarks, the EU’s deputy chief of delegation cautioned journalists and Liberians in general about the COVID-19 Pandemic and asked all Liberians to not give up the precautionary measures. “Continue to wash your hands and wear your masks (i see that some of you are not wearing masks). We encourage you to continue to do so.” He concluded.
