SINJE TOWN, – Eight US Peace Corps Volunteers assigned at various high schools in Grand Cape Mount County have cut short their stay in the county.
The Peace Corps’ activities were aborted Tuesday, December 3, due to instructions from the US Embassy near Monrovia.
In a letter addressed to the National Teachers Association Grand Cape Mount County Chapter, the Peace Corps disclosed that they have been asked by their Embassy here to leave the county.
They also cited the difficulty they have been experiencing in transacting business at banks as another reason for their premature departure.
In their communication, the Peace Corps explained that of late they have been experiencing difficulty in transacting business at various banks in the country, something which, they indicated, has significantly impeded their activities at the various institutions they are teaching.
The letter added that the communication from their Embassy asking them to leave coincided with the bad experiences they were facing with banks in the country.
The Peace Corps stressed that with the request from the State Department, they were left with no choice but to momentarily leave the country and return to the United States of America.
In her farewell speech, Peace Corps Volunteer Jaya Gundy, who was assigned at the Sinje Public School, indicated that she was sad to leave at the time students need her most.
She expressed the hope that she would be back soon to continue imparting knowledge to the students of Sinje Public School.
Meanwhile, the President of the National Teachers Association Grand Cape Mount County Chapter, Mr. Stephen Sneh, has indicated that the departure of the Peace Corps Volunteers has left a huge vacuum in the education sector of the county.
“We are so used to Peace Corps Volunteers at our various high schools in the county,” the National Teachers’ Association Cape Mount Chapter president said.
Mr. Sneh hoped that Liberia and the United States of America will work together as soon as possible to ensure that the Peace Corps Volunteers return to Liberia, as they play a major role in the education sector of the country.
There were eight US Peace Corps Volunteers assigned in Grand Cape Mount County, and serving at eight schools in the county.
Some of the schools in the county that benefited from the US Peace Corps Volunteers’ services include Robertsport High School, Madina Public School, Sinje Public and Tienii Public Schools.
The Peace Corps Volunteers assigned at the various high schools in Grand Cape Mount were mainly teaching the Sciences.
