ECOWAS Commission Special Representative to Liberia, Ambassador Babatunde Ajisomo, has extolled Liberian President George Weah for the call to action to expand the 45-km road from the international airport, RIA ,to ELWA junction worth US$94.5 million.
“Today is a very unique day in the history of Liberia and I want to commend you and your Administration for taking this giant step,” Amb. Babatunde Ajisomo told President Weah.
Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony of the road project in Unification Town, Margibi County, Ambassador Ajisomo noted that the project should have been done a long time ago, citing that it is better late than never.
According to the ECOWAS envoy, the implementation of the road project fits into the regional master plan of ECOWAS which, according to him, is aimed at promoting interconnectivity of the infrastructure from route to air, and also from air to sea.
He stressed that the road when constructed will subsequently bring economic dividends to Liberia as the project connect to the Southeastern part of Liberia which comprises three sea ports.
Amb. Ajisomo indicated that the road project will also create thousands of jobs, during construction, operation as well as the maintenance aspect.
Also, the ECOWAS diplomat asserted that the road project will help curtail the issue of road accidents that normally occurs on the RIA-to-ELWA junction highway because of the narrowness and lack of better lightening system of the road.
Ajisomo lamented that many people have passed on because of the bad condition of road, noting that it is because of such recognition that the regional African body is commending the Government of President Weah.
He expressed hope that the project will be completed in a timely manner couple with quality construction of the road for the benefit of the inhabitants of Liberia and international guests.
“This is the main road which is so convenient from the RIA to the capital city, the gateway to the capital. And when we look around in all ECOWAS member States what you see is the attraction as soon as you get out of the airport.
“It gives you a special impression about the country. So Mr. President your concern to lift this country up is well noted and acknowledged in the ECOWAS member States,” Amb. Ajisomo stressed.
The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) is a key partner in the construction of the expansion and rehabilitation of the highway.
