Liberia Calls for Women’s Meaningful Participation from Peace Negotiations to Implementation
New York — The Republic of Liberia co-sponsored a high-level side event alongside UN Women and the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in New York.
Speaking on behalf of the nation, Prutus Morlai Sackie, Liberia’s Political Coordinator to the United Nations Security Council, outlined three vital priorities aimed at addressing the systemic challenges faced by women peacebuilders and advocates globally.
First and foremost, Sackie underscored the critical need for comprehensive protection. He emphasized that safeguarding women peacebuilders must extend far beyond the moments they address international bodies. To accomplish this, governments and United Nations partners must strengthen confidential reporting mechanisms for safety threats, establish clear and rapid protocols for responding to reprisals, and deliver practical support that is directly shaped by the women at risk.
In addition to physical safety, Sackie highlighted the necessity of predictable and sustained funding. He stressed that adequate financial resources must be dedicated to trusted grassroots organizations. Flexible, reliable support is essential to cover core operational costs, security infrastructure, and staffing, ultimately allowing women’s peace organizations to function effectively and maintain their independence.
Furthermore, the Political Coordinator asserted that women’s participation in peace and security processes must hold real influence. Rather than symbolic inclusion, women must be empowered to shape diplomatic agendas from the outset, actively contribute to formal peace negotiations, and remain deeply involved throughout the implementation and monitoring phases.
Sackie noted that robust protection enables women to stay actively engaged, while sustained funding empowers their organizations to operate autonomously. He concluded with a compelling call to action, reminding world leaders that while women have consistently demonstrated immense courage, international commitments will ultimately be measured by the concrete opportunities and support that global institutions make possible.
