(LINA) – The Liberia Albino Society (LAS) is appealing to the National Legislature for increment in its budgetary allotment.
According to to LAS Executive Director, Madam Patricia N.C. Logan, since their inclusion in the National Budget they have added the provision of scholarships, micro-loans, feeding and medical outreach for persons living with albinism (PWAs) in the country.
Madam Logan disclosed that in 2011 the government allotted US$50,000 for the Society, and later increased it to US$150,000.
But she noted that in the current budget their allotment has been reduced to US$75,000, which, she noted, is not enough to take care of those that are living with Albinism in the country.
In an interview with the Liberia News Agency (LINA) during the observance of International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD), Logan petitioned the legislators to see reason to increase their budgetary allotment.
Madam Logan said the reduction of the budget will cause them not to meet their obligations in five counties in Liberia.
She added that since the establishment of this organization, the Government of Liberia has been providing support to it, noting that “presently forty-six students in and out of Montserrado County are going to schools of their choice through the support of our government.
At the same time, Madam Logan has submitted a seven-count recommendation to the National Legislature that will ensure the improvement of their lives and portray the good image of the pro-poor agenda.
