LAFA, NaFAA Host First-Ever Ocean Screening toPromote Sustainable Fisheries

The Liberia Artisanal Fishermen’s Association (LAFA), in collaboration with the National Fisheries and
Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), with support from Blue Ventures and the Trygg Mat Tracking Blue
Technology Coalition has hosted its first-ever ocean screening program at the Monrovia City Hall.
Held under the theme, “Building Partnerships for Sustainable Oceans and Resilient Coastal Livelihoods,”
The event marked Liberia’s debut screening of the documentary Ocean, narrated by the renowned
broadcaster David Attenborough.
The program brought together key stakeholders in the fisheries sector, including artisanal fishers, fish
processors, students, youth groups, non-governmental organizations, and intergovernmental partners.
Participants traveled from nine fishing communities across Montserrado and Bomi counties, reflecting
growing national interest in marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices.
Delivering the keynote address, NaFAA Director General J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr. emphasized the importance
of ocean conservation and responsible fisheries management.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting artisanal fishers and advancing policies
aimed at protecting Liberia’s marine resources for future generations.
Also in attendance was European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Madam Nona Deprez, representing the
European Union Delegation to Liberia.
She highlighted the EU’s continued partnership with Liberia in strengthening ocean governance and
improving the livelihoods of coastal communities.Organizers described the screening as a significant
milestone for LAFA, noting that the initiative aims to raise awareness about ocean protection while
fostering dialogue among fishers, policymakers, and development partners.
Participants praised LAFA and its partners for organizing what they termed a timely and inspiring event.
They pledged to play an active role in protecting the ocean, acknowledging its vital importance to their
livelihoods and the well-being of their families.
The event concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration to ensure a sustainable ocean
management and resilient coastal communities across Liberia.
