The Ministry of Justice has confirmed a jailbreak at the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, where several inmates escaped on September 20, 2026.
Following the incident, the Joint Security of Liberia was alerted and has launched a joint search and recapture operation to locate the escaped inmates and return them to custody.
The escape has raised serious concerns about security at the facility, prompting questions about how the breach occurred and whether existing security measures were sufficient. In response, the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation is verifying and reconciling prison records to determine the exact number and identities of the escapees.
The Ministry of Justice stated that it will publish the names and details of the escaped individuals once the verification process is complete to assist security forces and the public in the search.
Authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant and immediately report any information regarding the escapees to the nearest police station or security officers. Members of the public are strictly warned not to attempt to apprehend the escapees themselves or provide them with shelter or assistance.
Meanwhile, anxiety is growing among Kakata residents, with many noting that this is not the first security breach reported at the facility. Resident Jerffson Moore expressed fear that the escaped inmates could pose a direct threat to surrounding communities, calling for an immediate increase in security around the correctional facility. Residents are urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the escape and address systemic vulnerabilities.
This latest incident is expected to renew public scrutiny regarding prison security, inmate management, and operational conditions across Liberia’s correctional system. The Ministry of Justice assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation and search operations continue.
