The US President has expressed support for a ceasefire in the Middle East after more than a week of fighting between Israel and Gaza’s militant rulers Hamas which shows few signs of abating.

Joe Biden spoke with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a call on Monday, as the region’s fiercest hostilities in years has left at least 212 Palestinians dead – including 61 children and 36 women – and has killed ten people in Israel, including two children.

A statement issued by the White House following the call said: “The President reiterated his firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks.

“He encouraged Israel to make every effort to ensure the protection of innocent civilians.

“The two leaders discussed progress in Israel’s military operations against Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza.

“The President expressed his support for a ceasefire and discussed US engagement with Egypt and other partners towards that end.”
