The Institute for Research and Democratic Development -IREDD in collaboration with UN Women has concluded a two days workshop on promoting women rights and access to justice in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) is a research and policy advocacy organization that works with grassroots organizations and partners at the local and sub-national level. Our partnerships are geared towards creating linkages between local groups and their local authorities on the one hand with policy actors. Such catalytic partnerships provide greater leverage for the work of local actors extends their programmatic reach and enhances their ability to influence local, sub-national and national policy actors.
IREDD works closely with twenty-two local CBOs and marginalized groups throughout the country on issues of natural resources governance, peace and security, legislative strengthening and accountability, budgets and contracting, access to justice, human rights and service delivery.
The workshop started Friday November 16, 2018 and ended Saturday November 17, 2018 in Gbarnga, Bong County.
Speaking to this Paper at the end of the workshop, the Project Manager for Women rights at UN Women Bob Johnson said that the training was focused on educating women on their basic rights in society.
Mr. Johnson said the workshop will serve as an eye-opener for women in the county noting, the rights of women in Liberia have been violated by their male counterparts over the years something he said is counterproductive to their growth.
According to Johnson, survey conducted by UN Women on the rights of women in Liberia realized that the rights of women is continuously be jeopardized in Liberia.
The workshop that was held under theme “Legal awareness and education for women; capacity building to engage in community policy and creating demand for legal aid and providing legal aid for women” brought women groupings from across the county
Women’s’ rights project under UN women according to Mr. Johnson is targeting five counties including Bong, Margibi, Bassa, River Cess and Gbapolou counties.
At the close of the training, some of the participants lauded IREDD and partners for organizing the educative forum in Bong County.
Participants Lorpu Paye and Mrs. Mary Marla promised to share the knowledge acquired from the training with their colleagues in order to understand their rights and responsibilities in the homes and various work places.
According to them, in time passed their rights have been violated by their husband and even by national government.
They further assured IREDD and Partners for a proper implementation of the knowledge received for the betterment of the society.
