Joint Security in Bomi County has arrested a man believed to be in his forties for being in possession of 1,068 kilo grams of compressed Marijuana.
Speaking with reporters in Bomi, DEA Special Agent Kula Dennis puts the street value of the drugs at ten million, six hundred, and eighty thousand Liberian dollars.
Agent Dennis indicated that the drugs came by way of Jedenma from neighboring Sierra Leone on board a Cargo truck with license plate marked T- 30262.
She said the man was picked up at Klay Check Point following intelligence from the LDEA informers.
According to her, the driver of the truck Aaron Taylor commonly known as FCB has been detained in the LDEA withholding sell and is currently undergoing investigation along with the other five passengers on board the cargo truck.
She added the suspect is expected to charged and sent to court, adding the latest arrest of huge quantity of drugs brings to three in less than a year in the Bomi County.
The driver of the cargo truck, Aaron Taylor has taken full responsibility of smuggling the dangerous substance in the country and pleaded for mercy.
Western region of Liberia is noted for frequent arrests of huge consignment of different kinds of drugs mostly smuggled into Liberia from neighboring Sierra Leone.
The arrest was made ahead of observance of International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking on Monday, June 26 2018.
“As we celebrate another day in our quest to safe the society from drugs and other substance abuse, I want to challenged DEA personnel to remind vigilant as traffickers and users are imploring different tactics everyday how to transport the harmful substance, she stressed”.
Madam Dennis emphasized the danger associated with the act, while also calling on citizens to be agents in the fight against drugs and substance abuse by exposing those behind the unwarranted act in their communities.
The DEA official at the same time launched an appeal to central government for additional man power to beef up the strength of DEA officers as well as provide logistical support for the Bomi detachment.
Liberia has no strong drug law on the books something that undermines the fight with mainly the country’s youthful population seriously affected from the practice.
Civil society actors and the ordinary citizens have repeated calls for the passage of the drug law current before Liberia’ 54th National Legislature.
They want the law on drug non-billable offense to deter whole be drug dealers and users from engaging in the act.
The Day is celebrated each year on June 26, the UN Office on Drug and Crime uses the day to highlight the dangers of drugs use and their illegal trade and provides educational material to help spread the message about extreme cultural and economic harm.
The day was originally instigated by a resolution of a special session on drugs of the UN’s General Assembly in 1987, the annual awareness day was found to mark the centenary of China’s early efforts to combat widely regarded as the international war on drugs.
