In Observance of International Women’s Day, SDI Calls for Concrete Actions in Protecting Women and Girls

As the World observed the International Women’s Day (IWD), the Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) calls on all stakeholders that this day shouldnot only be characterized by the usual speeches and statements.

In a statement issued on Friday March 8, 2024 commemorating the day, the right based organization calls for concrete and practical actions that will finally put an end to various issues affecting women and girls in Liberia including domestic violence in all its forms, rape, sexual exploitation and abuse as well as sexual harassment, and economic insecurity.

“The SDI insists that the inherent and God given rights of women and girls must be recognized, protected respected, cultural, religious and societal prejudices and biases against them be abolished, eliminated and destroyed,” the SDI said in a statement issued under the signature of its Executive Director, Wilfred Gray-Johnson.

The organization assures that it will continue to advocate for justice for women and girls that are abused and marginalized and push for empowerment and equal opportunities for all women of Liberia.

“SDI says no to all forms of violence, subjugation and denigration against women and girls in Liberia,” the statement added.

The statement also quotes the Gender Focal Person of SDI, Madam Nornor Bee as saying “In SDI, we strive to foster an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to reach their full potentials. We recognize that gender equality is not achieved through isolated efforts, but through a collective commitment to change. Therefore, we are dedicated to implementing policies and practices that promote gender equity at every level, from recruitment and retention to career advancement and leadership.”

“On this day, I would like to express my gratitude to all the men who have actively supported and championed gender equality within our SDI and beyond. Gender equality is not a battle that women should fight alone; it requires the engagement and involvement of men as allies and advocates. Together, we can challenge stereotypes, promote respectful relationships, and create a culture that values and respects the contributions of every individual,” the statement quotes Madam Bee.

Madam Bee is also quoted in the statement as saying “Heartfelt appreciation to all the women who have paved the way for future generations, who continue to inspire us with their resilience, strength, and determination. Your contributions and accomplishments have made the world a better place, and we are committed to carrying your legacy forward.”

March 8 every year is celebrated as International Women’s Day (IWD). This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year’s campaign theme is “Inspire Inclusion.”

About SDI: The Sustainable Development Institute was founded in 2002. It is the Liberian charter of Friends of the Earth (FoE), the world’s largest grassroots environmental network. SDI works to transform decision-making processes of natural resource management so the benefits are shared equally. SDI’s work aims to create space for the participation of local communities in decision making processes on natural resources. We work to support and enhance their contributions to those processes and strengthen mechanisms that will ensure that communities receive a fair share of the benefits derived from natural resource exploitation.
