Grand Kru Gender Corrdinator Vows Restless Efforts in the Fight Against Sexual Gender Base Violence
Barclayville, Jan 4, 2025 – Grand Kru County Coordinator for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Regina Walker,has expressed gratitude to the government for her appointment, as President Joseph Boakai leads efforts to increase the number of women in local and national positions.
Speaking in an interview with Grand Kru TV recently in Monrovia, the County’s new Gender Coordinator committed her representation of the Ministry and her service to the county with sincerity and integrity in addressing gender issues that negatively impact society.
Madam Walker, a former Representative candidate who ran on the Unity Party ticket in Electoral District #2 Grand Kru County, emphasized the importance of awareness campaign about the statutory operations of the Ministry’s presence in the county and the need to educate citizens on gender-related issues.
She also highlighted the need for citizens to be informed about the procedures concerning reaching out to the relevant actors on gender-related matters. By fostering greater understanding of gender-related matters and engagement with stakeholders, Walker believes her office can better address the challenges posed by gender inequality in the county and the greater society.
She said the situation in Grand Kru County poses a significant challenge to the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations. She ferenced the increased reports of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as child abuse in gold mining camps, underscored the urgent need for enhanced law enforcement presence in the camps and community support systems to minimize if not to eradicate these abuses.
Walker’s emphasis on understanding and community engagements are crucial to creating effective solutions to these pressing challenges.
She added that establishing partnerships with NGOs, local leaders, and law enforcement could help in addressing these abuses and ensuring, in addition to ensuring access of victims to the necessary support and resources.
The Grand Kru County Gender Coordinator sees it an imperative to prioritize the protection of those at risk and pointed out that ensuring an environment where such acts of violence are committed are not tolerated.
Coordinator Walker further emphasized the importance of engaging local leaders in meaningful dialogue about the dangers of gender-based violence.
She said there were not insufficient community engagement regarding the exploitation of young girls in the past, and indicated that young girls were often deprived of their education and forced into roles of breadwinners for their families.
She affirmed her commitment to addressing these critical gender issues during her county tour and awareness campaign, ensuring that such practices are recognized and challenged within the community.
She than indicated that her leadership with work with the county administration in providing vocational training opportunities for women in Grand Kru County in empowering them to enhance their skills to make meaningful contributions to their household and communities. Madam Walker noted with those capacity building training opportunities it will help the women to improve their economic status and foster a sense of independence and self-worth.
Additionally, it can play a significant role in promoting gender equality and encouraging positive relationships within families. It’s important to create an environment where both men and women feel supported and valued, which ultimately benefits the entire community, said Regina.
Over the lack of some key components within the County’s Criminal Justice System, Grand Kru Ministry of Gender Representative is emphasizing the urgent need for the construction of a modern Correction Center and an increase in security personnel, particularly police, in Grand Kru. She asserted that achieving these goals would significantly contribute to the reduction of gender-based crimes.
Earlier, the County Ministry of Gender Representative stated that with logistical support and collaboration from the community, the fight against harmful practices affecting women and children could become a reality.”
Meanwhile, Regina Walker stated that her office, is committed in partnership with the Liberia National Police to publicly naming and shaming individuals consistently who abuse their wives at home. Additionally, she promised that any local leaders who are found to be compromising such cases throughout Grand Kru will face appropriate legal actions.
