Gov’t Reaffirms Strong Commitment To Press Freedom In Liberia

The Liberian government has reiterated its strong dedication to safeguarding press freedom and fostering the development of a dynamic and independent media sector.

This assurance was given by Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah during the national celebration of World Press Freedom Day, held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Monrovia City Hall.

Speaking on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration, Minister Piah affirmed the government’s complete support for free speech and independent journalism, recognizing their crucial role in Liberia’s democratic advancement.

“The Boakai-led government remains fully committed to working collaboratively with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) to strengthen the media sector,” stated Minister Piah. “We believe in responsible journalism, and we view the PUL as a vital partner in promoting professionalism, accountability, and ethical media practices.”

Minister Piah also underscored the importance of experienced journalists in mentoring the next generation of reporters, urging senior media professionals to spearhead efforts aimed at raising journalistic standards across the nation.

“The older professionals should be the guiding force behind the Press Union’s activities,” he emphasized. “They must guide and support emerging journalists to ensure the media remains a credible and respected force within society.”

Also delivering a keynote address at the ceremony was Abdullah Karama, Acting Chairperson of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), who highlighted the pivotal role of journalism in national development.

“Journalism serves as an engine for national progress,” Karama asserted. “The LTA stands ready to collaborate with the Press Union to provide digital training and resources that will empower journalists to excel in this evolving media landscape.”

Karama pledged the LTA’s commitment to assisting journalists in enhancing their digital capabilities, acknowledging the indispensable role of technology in contemporary journalism.

The event convened media professionals, government officials, civil society representatives, and international partners in a unified call for press freedom and the safety of journalists. It was observed under the global theme: “Sustaining Independent Journalism and Press Freedom in the Digital Age.”

The Press Union of Liberia joined the global media community in commemorating the day, urging all stakeholders to protect the independence of the press amidst increasing threats from misinformation, digital manipulation, and political interference.

“As digital platforms reshape how news is produced and disseminated, the necessity to defend press freedom has become even more critical,” a PUL statement conveyed. “We commend the bravery of journalists who continue to report the truth under challenging and often perilous circumstances.”

The PUL called upon the government, civil society, development partners, and the Liberian public to support policies and initiatives that promote freedom of expression, enhance media safety, and build resilience within the journalism sector.

“Today, we reaffirm that a free press is not a privilege—it is a fundamental aspect of democracy, a guardian of human rights, and a voice for those who are marginalized,” the Union concluded.
