Girl, 15, Drowns In Po-River

-Under Mysterious Circumstances

Brewerville-7 June 2025: Kamara Town in the Po-River Community in Brewerville was submerged into an atmosphere sorrow when a 15-year-old girl identified as Jocelyn Y. Tenkpeh drowned last Saturday June 7, in the “Kpor River” which is usually referred to as Po-River, where she reportedly followed her friends to wash,.

The entire Community, men and women, boys and girls, converged from every nook and cranny at the riverside to rescue Mayah, as Jocelyn was affectionately called, where a retired American Marine in the community, only identified as “Ja’key Brown” and other swimmers in the community were already in action diving to find and rescue the kid.

Mayah left her residence after washing her clothes and followed her friends who were said to have gone to the riverside to wash and swim.

Some eyewitnesses said Mayah jumped into the river to rescue her friend, another girl resident in the Kamara Town, who too went to sim and was drowning. The 15-year, fair-colored slim girl successfully rescued her friend, but her efforts to come back on shore did not materialize as she was said to have been seen helpless and wearied.

An eyewitness who is one of the swimmers, a youngman who went to rescue Mayah, reported that he could not be able to rescue the victim because she was unusually heavy to the extent that he could not be able to swim with her on shore.

To the amazement of those on the scene, Mayah sank in the depth of the river thereby disappearing from the rest of them. Parents and friends who later converged when the news broke went wailing for Mayah, a 7th grade student of the Bailey Town Public School.

Another eyewitness said he too was on the riverside washing when a stone mysteriously came from nowhere, hit and bloodied his mouth, as he went displaying a mark on his mouth and what he said was a mysterious scratch on his chest. He further explained that he told them that what happened to him was a mysterious sign and advised that they go from the riverside.

“I told them that his is not a good sign, let us go from here,” the eyewitnesses who declined to be identified by name explained, adding that he left at that point with others while Mayah with yet another friends left back.

Another eyewitnesses who also asked for anonymity said she and Mayah were on a rock by the riverside and Mayah, out of play, jumped into the river with her, and at that point they parted in the water.

“As I was drowning, my brother came and pushed me back on the rock to the shore. From there I started to run home in fear,” her friend who went into the water to swim furthered, adding, “I did not know all that happened behind me.”

The editor of the Global News Network (GNN-Liberia) who rushed on the scene saw friends, relatives and schoolmates grouped in tears, weeping for the victim.

“Aye Mayah! What brought you here? If you knew this, you wouldn’t come to the Riverside,” Taywah, the step-mother of Mayah wept aloud.

The step mother, a young woman, could not stand the diverse versions of explanations about drowning of Mayah. She left the riverside weeping as Mayah’s father, dressed in a blue T-shirts and a dark pair of short trousers, was seen held between two men come crying.

“Where is my daughter? Where is my daughter” he went shouting in agony.

As the crowd was growing larger by the seconds, traditionally inclined people among the crowd unsuccessfully asked the women out of the Scene to perform a ritual that could lead to successful diving mission to rescue Mayah, but the crowds were uncontrollable.

Meanwhile, the body of the late Jocelyn Yah Tenkpeh has been recovered up the Kpor River, after three days of search. There has been no report of foul play so far; Reports Bill K. Jarkloh.
