Flenekan School Battles Capacity Crisis: Students Learn in Zinc Structures Amid Stalled Construction

Barclayville, Grand Kru County, December 10, 2025 The Flenekan Elementary and Junior High School, situated within the Barclayville Education District, is facing severe challenges due to an inadequate learning environment and insufficient seating capacity as it endeavors to prepare the next generation of leaders.

Founded in 1955, the school has consistently encountered numerous obstacles, including deficient infrastructure, insufficient textbooks, and critically inadequate seating arrangements. These issues persistently hinder the educational experience for approximately 198 students during the 2025/2026 academic year.

During a press conference on December 8, 2025, the principal, Mr. Nahwon Wenyon, characterized the school’s present state as “deplorable and unfit to serve as an educational institution.”

Mr. Wenyon stated that the institution is currently functioning within zinc-round structures and open areas, which significantly impede daily academic activities. He noted that the learning process is further challenged during the rainy season, as the temporary structures provide minimal protection.

He expressed regret over the limited support provided by the surrounding community in enhancing the school, despite continuous efforts to engage them. The principal disclosed that community members were only able to construct an open shelter surrounded by plastic sheets, which he deemed entirely inadequate for educational purposes.

Mr. Wenyon formally urged the Government of Liberia, specifically through the Ministry of Education, to finalize the construction of a classroom building that commenced in 2023 by District #2 Representative Jonathan Fonati Koffa.

He conveyed his assurance that finalizing the construction would decisively address the persistent challenges of inadequate learning environments and limited seating capacity, while also significantly enhancing the school’s overall infrastructure development for the benefit of its nearly 200 students.
