FeJAL and CBL Conclude Financial Literacy Training in Gbarnga, Targeting Grassroots Leaders in Bong County

By Christian Appleton

Gbarnga, Bong County – The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL), with support from the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), has successfully concluded a two-day “Training of Trainers” (ToT) workshop in Gbarnga. The initiative, which ran from August 4 to 5, aims to expand financial education and literacy throughout Bong County by empowering local leaders to become financial educators.

The intensive sessions brought together influential community members, including representatives from women’s organizations, youth networks, the disability community, market associations, and local authorities. These participants, now designated as community mobilizers, are equipped to teach basic financial management skills to underserved populations in their respective areas.

The workshop curriculum covered nine core areas of financial literacy:

  • Financial goal setting
  • Household budgeting
  • Income generation
  • Expense prioritization
  • Savings
  • Responsible borrowing
  • Debt management
  • Investment awareness
  • Risk mitigation

Facilitators from both FeJAL and the CBL utilized interactive sessions with real-life scenarios, group discussions, and digital tools like Kobo Toolbox to enhance outreach and reporting. The program is a key component of a nationwide Financial Education and Literacy Program, which is funded through the Central Bank’s Financial Sector Development Implementation Plan (FSDIP).

“Our aim is to empower everyday Liberians with the knowledge and tools to make informed financial decisions,” a FeJAL facilitator stated. “This program not only improves financial literacy but also strengthens economic resilience at the grassroots level.”

The initiative specifically targets low-income and vulnerable groups, such as market sellers, small business owners, rural savings associations, and transport workers, who often face significant barriers to accessing formal financial services.

With Bong County as one of the early beneficiaries, FeJAL and the CBL have committed to expanding the program to other counties in the coming months, furthering their broader effort to promote financial inclusion and sustainable economic development across Liberia.
