EU Nudges Liberia To Enact Law Abolishing Death Penalty
The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Liberia, Ambassador Helene Cave, is admonishing Liberia to move forward in abolishing the death penalty in its laws in conformity with the over 100 countries that currently support the move to end the practice.
Ambassador Cave made the call on Wednesday at programs marking ‘International Day Against the Death Penalty’ held in the auditorium of the University of Liberia.
The EU Ambassador urged the country to study the possibility of joining the worldwide movement against the death penalty in Liberia’s jurisdiction.
The EU head described capital punishment as a cruel and inhumane punishment which, she said, has failed to serve as deterrence of the criminal behavior and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity.
Amb. Cave said the European Union was founded on some essential values and principles, one of which, she noted, is the respect of human dignity and the protection of human rights around the world.
According to Ambassador Cave, the EU maintains a strong and an unequivocal position against the implementation of the death penalty at all times and under all circumstances.
She reiterated that the European Union is encouraging all countries worldwide to accede to the second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights on the abolition of the death penalty to which, she said, Liberia is a part.
The diplomat also disclosed that the EU is supporting efforts of international bodies, including the African Union (AU) and civil society organizations around the world in championing the cause of abolishing the death penalty, especially through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights.
