Liberia’s aviation sector is poised for significant modernization following the launch of an €8.6 million infrastructure and aviation safety project at Roberts International Airport (RIA), supported by the European Union (EU) and the Federal Republic of Germany.

The investment is aimed at strengthening airport infrastructure, improving aviation safety, enhancing emergency response capabilities, and bringing Liberia’s air transport system closer to international aviation standards.

The project, officially launched on Friday, October 30, 2026, comprises €7.8 million in funding from the European Union and €800,000 from Germany, with implementation being led by the German Development Agency (GIZ).

Under the initiative, Roberts International Airport is expected to benefit from modern runway and taxiway lighting systems, upgraded air traffic control and navigation facilities, improved electricity supply and backup power systems, and enhanced passenger screening equipment.

The project will also provide modern firefighting trucks, ambulances, and emergency rescue equipment to strengthen the airport’s capacity to respond to aircraft emergencies and other safety-related incidents.

These interventions are expected to improve airport operations, particularly during nighttime flights and periods of challenging weather conditions, while creating a safer environment for passengers, airline operators, and airport personnel.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, European Union Chargé d’Affaires Gilles Mataayron emphasized the strategic importance of Roberts International Airport, describing it as more than an entry point into Liberia. He noted that the airport serves as a critical gateway for trade, tourism, investment, and regional cooperation.

Transport Minister Sirleaf Tyler welcomed the investment, describing it as an important contribution to Liberia’s economic transformation and the development of the country’s aviation industry.

Meanwhile, GIZ Director for Africa Dr. Tobias Thiel characterized the initiative as a flagship investment under the European Union’s Global Gateway Strategy, which seeks to support infrastructure development and strengthen international partnerships.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the project will also prioritize staff training, emergency preparedness, infrastructure rehabilitation, and improved airport maintenance systems to ensure the long-term sustainability of the investment.

Deputy Managing Director for Administration of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), John Z. Buway, expressed appreciation to the European Union and Germany for their support, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve airport operations and strengthen emergency response capacity.

LAA Managing Director Hon. Ernest R. Hughes, in remarks shared ahead of the ceremony, described the investment as a major milestone in Liberia’s aviation modernization agenda. He also emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and effective collaboration throughout the project’s implementation.

The €8.6 million investment is expected to contribute to improved international connectivity, strengthen public confidence in Liberia’s aviation system, and enhance Roberts International Airport’s capacity to serve as a competitive aviation gateway in West Africa.

As implementation progresses, the project is expected to provide Liberia with improved aviation infrastructure and safety systems while supporting broader efforts to attract investment, promote tourism, and advance economic development.
