The right to engage with our government and participate in the democratic process is a fundamental principle that should be available to all. However, for many Liberians with disabilities, this right is often hindered by significant physical barriers.
As the Executive Director of the National Commission on Disabilities, I have experienced first-hand the challenges associated with accessing our legislative offices. On one occasion, I required the assistance of some young men to help me navigate the stairs to reach a legislator’s office, and when I was ready to leave, I found myself in a difficult situation, having to crawl without my wheelchair to reach the ground floor.
No individual should have to face such an experience.
The ongoing disrepair of elevators within the Legislature poses a serious obstacle for individuals with mobility challenges, effectively preventing them from engaging with their elected representatives. This situation excludes countless citizens from participating in government discussions, voicing their concerns, or witnessing the legislative processes that significantly impact their lives.
This is a matter of concern. While critical discussions unfold in our legislative halls, many citizens continue to confront pressing issues without the means to access their lawmakers. Elevators are not simply conveniences; they are essential components of an inclusive democracy. The lack of maintenance for these facilities sends a message that accessibility is not prioritized, and as such, many citizens may feel that their voices are not valued within our democratic system.
We find ourselves at a juncture where continued inaccessibility is prevalent in many government offices. It is essential to question whether we as a society recognize the contributions that individuals with disabilities can make to Liberia.
Therefore, I respectfully urge our legislators to reaffirm their commitment to all Liberians by ensuring that every citizen has the ability to access and navigate government offices, including the esteemed halls of the Legislature.
Together, we can strive for a democracy that is truly inclusive. As we work towards this goal, let us remember that a democracy that serves only a few ultimately benefits none.
