ELWA Hospital Statement: HIV Services impacted by funding suspension; urgent need for help

Since 2002, ELWA Hospital has provided outpatient HIV services through partnerships with various NGOs and the Liberian government. Organizations such as FHI 360, whose staff work alongside ELWA Hospital-employed team members in our HIV/AIDS Counseling Center, have supported these services—testing, counseling, and medications.

As of January 31, 2025, FHI 360 has suspended its services due to an interruption in USAID funding. While discussions are ongoing about the potential resumption of U.S. PEPFAR funding for HIV services, there is currently no timeline for its return.

Immediate Impact on Our Patients:
-Data collection and reporting are on hold.
-Viral load testing has been suspended.
-Peer counseling follow-ups have stopped.
-Medication shortages are critical—infant and pediatric supplies are exhausted, and medications for adults and pregnant women are limited.
-HIV test kits for diagnosis and blood screening are in short supply, which may impact our ability to accept donations and provide transfusions.

Despite these challenges, some services continue through ELWA staff and FHI 360 personnel volunteering their time.
We are in active communication with the National AIDS Control Program (NACP), the Liberian Ministry of Health, and other organizations working tirelessly to restore the supply chain for HIV care. We recognize that many healthcare facilities across Liberia and globally face similar hardships.
