The eight Malaysians, who were stranded in Monrovia, Liberia since Feb 4 after they were cheated by a job syndicate have arrived at Sibu Airport following a flight from KLIA.
Their plane from KLIA touched down at Sibu Airport at 9.25pm Monday (March 4).
They were accompanied by Kuching MP Kelvin Yii.
After coming out of the departure hall, they were escorted to lodge a police report at the airport.
The group, all of whom are Sarawakians, are aged between 39 and 66.
The eight are Aji Surau, Bon Egat, Sallim Tahir, Suhaili Gani, Gawan Masin, Enyang Ato, Untol Luyang, and Dingai Nyalak.
One of the men’s wife told reporters that they were recruited by two local “taukeh” to work in Liberia after being offered a salary of RM9,000 per month.
Sidah Akup, 31, who is the wife of Suhaili, said her husband left for Liberia on Jan 3 this year.
“He was given an advance salary of RM2,000 by the taukeh while his airfare was paid by the so-called company in Liberia. But when he and the others arrived there, they found that there were no jobs for them,” she said.
Sidah, who is from Betong, said she knew this as Suhaili had called her from Liberia.
